London

The city of London is located in the country of England and is considered to be the capital of the country. London is full of rich history and is actually where the pilgrims came from when founding what is now known as the United States of America. London is home to one of the most diverse populations in the world with hundreds of languages being spoken within the country. The city of London is home to over 7,500,000 residents and with such a small area, is very dense. This fact lends to the notion that there is a lot of crime in the city or that the city is probably very dirty but London is not the norm. There are actually lower crime rates in the city and it is quite clean in general. London is also home to the royal family and is full of cathedrals from the catholic influence dating back almost 2,000 years. Let’s talk more about this history.

London was founded by the Romans during the first century. This mixed with the Danish settlers in that area and the influence of the Anglo-Saxons created the culture that we know today as London. When the Roman empire was evangelized by the Christians in the first century and later became the founding place of the catholic and orthodox churches, this influence also spread to London. Later after the reformation London separated from what was then a dictatorship of the religious leaders that spurred the pilgrims to found America. William Shakespeare lived in London and much of his writings were done here. In fact, King James had the Christian Bible translated into English while on the throne (when England was still a monarchy) and had William Shakespeare help him translate and write some of the first English manuscripts in the London area.

Getting more into the modern era of the city of London, we cannot help but mention that at one point London was the largest city in the world. This was through most of the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Although it is not close to meeting that feat today, it is still a very large city in population. London is known for its foggy conditions that are constantly in the forecast. The city actually grew in its boundaries throughout the past 200 years and metro London now is home to more than 13,500,000 people. Although this metro area was not in the original figures of population for London, some people still count London metro as actual London.

One of the biggest monuments in the city of London is the “Big Ben” clock. This clock is known all around the world and is the world’s most famous clock. As mentioned earlier, London is known for its foggy conditions. It is also known for its rainy conditions. Although the total amount of rainfall is not more than surrounding areas, the rain seems to come down steadily throughout the year. London’s economy is now one of the largest economies and most healthy economies in the world. The British Pound has been at 150% or more of the value of the US dollar for several decades now.

The London government falls under the national government of the United Kingdom. The government is run by a parliament which differs from the US form of government in many ways. The voice of the people is not heard as easily in places like London as it is in places like America. London’s transportation system includes cars and trains mostly. Trains are a large part of transportation because of the dense population. London, like the rest of England, has their drivers drive on the left side of the road. The history and artistic character of the city makes is a great place for tourists all over the world to visit.
